Definite diagnosis of breast cancers by means of pathologic examination on biopsy speci-men is the most accurate and justified. Breast biopsy could have frequently detected breast cancers in earlier stages with the probability of improved survival in these patients.
Clinical analysis and review was carried out in 80 biopsied lesions at Department of Gen-eral Surgery, College of Medicine, Hanyang University Hospital during the period of 1L years and 7 months (May, 1972-Dec. 1983)
The results were obtained as follows;
1) The peak incidence of breast cancer patients was in the 40-49 age group(50%) and the mean age was 45.6.
2) Palpable mass was the most common symptom when present at hospital and mass with pain and mass with nipple discharge were the others.
3) The most frequent site of the breast cancer was at the upper outer quadrant, followed by the upper inner quadrant, lower outer quadrant lower inner quadrant, and the central area. The right breast was 33 cases(41.2%) and the left breast was 46 cases(57.5%)
4) The duration of mass was lesser than 6 months was 51 cases(63.7%) and 6~12months, was 17 cases(21.3%)
5) The tumor sizes lesser than 2cm was 26 cases(32.5%) and 2~5cm. was 40 cases(50%) 6) Male breast cancer occurred 1 case among 80 malignancies. 7) The most common type of breast cancer was infiltrating adenocarcinoma. 8) All patients of breast cancer were classified by T.N.M. system for staging to follow up surgical result. Stage I group was the most frequent as 38.7%
9) Among 48 breast cancer patients with axillary lymph node metastasis, 54. 1% from
the upper outer quadrant, 20. 8% from the upper inner quadrant.
10) Standard radical mastectomy was performed in 59 cases(73.7%) and the Modified
radical mastectomy in 18 cases(22.5%)
11) Hematoma was the most frequent postoperative complication (30.8%)
